Shopping for Whole Grains

I went on a grocery store tour via insta stories last Friday. One thing we tackled was the bread aisle! With so many options, from multi grain to honey wheat, it’s hard to know which kind is the best choice.

Let's take a quick minute to review about grains. The Dietary Guidelines recommends that half of the grains that we consume be Whole Grains. This means that the grain has remained completely intact and includes the bran, the germ, and the endosperm. A refined grain has been stripped of the bran. Whole grains include more fiber, more B vitamins, and take longer for our body digest. This allows us to stay fuller, longer. Whole grains are found in oats, wheat, barley, quinoa, spelt, rye, and even popcorn!

Reading the food label, can help you make the most nutritious choice. If the first ingredient says “WHOLE WHEAT” then you will be getting all the nutrition benefits that come from getting whole grains.
